A Wave of Technology was dramatically changing the printing industry in the late 1940’s. The industry was evolving from letterpress toward offset printing, which created significant opportunities for many post WWII veterans. Many of these veterans were anxious to come home and seek employment or even start businesses. Such was the case with two young salesmen who were working for a nationally recognized distributor of graphic arts supplies and equipment. Their names were William “Bill” J. Baecher and Donald “Don” E. Meek. They decided to become partners and in 1950, founded Modern Business Service, a commercial printing company. As the company grew, they saw opportunity to distribute graphic arts supplies.
In 1953, at the advise of their attorney, they formed a new company, Modern Photo Offset Supply Inc. In 1959, the partners, decided to go their separate ways. Bill Baecher become the sole owner of Modern Business Service, while Don Meek became the sole owner of Modern Photo Offset Supply Inc.
In 1967, Mr. Meek employed his eldest son, Gary followed by son’s, Dan in 1970 and Ted in 1972.
In 1978 Modern Photo Offset Supply Inc. purchased Reliable Lithographic and Offset Supply Co. Louisville, KY from Earl B Worley and Margaret “Miss” Berry.
In 1989, the company purchased the assets of competitor, Autographics of Indianapolis, IN.
Don Meek retired in 1995. His three sons continue to operate the family businesses, Modern Photo Offset Supply Inc. and Reliable Lithographic & Offset Supply Co. Inc.
Today, the printing industry is experiencing a new wave of technology. We are in the midst of a digital revolution which is offering new challenges and opportunities as we move forward into the 21st century. |
